Resumo de autor: The exponential grow of the wind sector in Portugal required the development of planning tools for the siting of the wind farms, its connection to the existing grid, as well as the assessment of the country's existing wind resource capable of enabling an economic, social and environmental sustainable development. The methodology developed and presented in this paper was initiated a decade ago with the classification of the existing wind data adequate to wind energy resource assessment as well as the identification of the constraints to the deployment of wind power plants. This GIS based methodology was systematically applied to the Portuguese territory and resulted on the identification of the available optimum sites for wind plant development at the lowest grid connection costs. The methodology may be easily applied to other countries or regions, thus enabling a systematic and objective approach to the wind power deployment.

Resumo de autor: ABSTRACT: Wind energy is becoming a top contributor to the renewable energy mix, which raises potential reliability issues for the grid due to the fluctuating nature of its source. To achieve an adequate reserve commitment which mitigates wind integration costs as well as to promote market participation, it is necessary to provide models that can capture daily patterns in wind power production. This paper presents a cyclic inhomogeneous Markov process, which is based on a three-dimensional state-space partition of the wind power, speed and direction variables. Each transition probability is a time-dependent function, expressed as a Bernstein polynomial. The model parameters are estimated by solving a constrained optimization problem: The objective function combines two maximum likelihood estimators, one to ensure that the Markov process long-term behavior reproduces the data accurately and, another to capture daily fluctuations. The paper presents a convex formulation for the overall optimization problem and demonstrates its applicability through the analysis of a case-study. The proposed model is capable of reproducing the diurnal patterns of a three-year dataset collected from a wind turbine located in a mountainous region in Portugal. In addition, it is shown how to compute persistence statistics directly from the Markov process transition matrices. Based on the case-study, the power production persistence through the daily cycle is analysed and discussed.

Resumo de autor: The onshore wind power capacity in Portugal has increased very rapidly in the last five years and this high rate of development is expected to continue up to 2013 although at a slower rate. By then almost all sustainable onshore resource assessment will be deployed. Nevertheless, the full exploitation of the wind resource in Portugal offers other possibilities, among them the installation of small wind turbines (SWT), namely micro-turbines for domestic use in urban and constructed environments. To contribute to the needs of developers, investors and the overall population's expectations and needs into this newer type of renewable market, a new a new line of research related to the wind resource assessment in urban and constructed areas was initiated. The present work presents a first user-friendly method to assess the urban wind potential at low experimental and computational costs, compatible with the scale of investment of micro-generation. A case study, where an urban area is identified and treated as very complex topography, was characterized in terms of wind resource, being the preliminary results presented here.

Resumo de autor: A method to assess the impact of wind power generation on weak distribution grids and their local consumers is presented. The method addresses the influence of different factors as the wind turbine technology, the topology of the grid, the wind turbulence and the existence of local loads, that influence the quality of the power delivered to the grid. It is described how this method enables the application of the International Electrotechnical Commission(IEC) standard for the assessment of wind turbines power and voltage quality, currently under development for a single wind turbine, in the feasibility study phase of a wind park.

Resumo de autor: ABSTRACT: The assessment of wind energy resource for the development of deep offshore wind plants requires the use of every possible source of data and, in many cases, includes data gathered at meteorological stations installed at islands, islets or even oil platforms—all structures that interfere with, and change, the flow characteristics. This work aims to contribute to the evaluation of such changes in the flow by developing a correction methodology and applying it to the case of Berlenga island, Portugal. The study is performed using computational fluid dynamic simulations (CFD) validated by wind tunnel tests. In order to simulate the incoming offshore flow with CFD models a wind profile, unknown a priori, was established using observations from two coastal wind stations and a power law wind profile was fitted to the existing data (a=0.165). The results show that the resulting horizontal wind speed at 80 m above sea level is 16% lower than the wind speed at 80 m above the island for the dominant wind direction sector.

Resumo de autor: ABSTRACT: In the latest years the wind energy sector experienced an exponential growth all over the world. What started as a deployment of onshore projects, soon moved to offshore and, more recently to the urban environment within the context of smart cities and renewable micro-generation. However, urban wind projects using micro turbines do not have enough profit margins to enable the setup of comprehensive and expensive measurement campaigns, a standard procedure for the deployment of large wind parks. To respond to the wind assessment needs of the future smart cities a new and simple methodology for urban wind resource assessment was developed. This methodology is based on the construction of a surface involving a built area in order to estimate the wind potential by treating it as very complex orography. This is a straightforward methodology that allows estimating the sustainable urban wind potential, being suitable to map the urban wind resource in large areas. The methodology was applied to a case study and the results enabled the wind potential assessment of a large urban area being consistent with experimental data obtained in the case study area, with maximum deviations of the order of 10% (mean wind speed) and 20% (power density).

Resumo de autor: This paper presents the design methodology of a new wind turbine blade section that achieves high performance in urban environment by increasing the maximum lift. For this purpose, a turbomachine blade rows inverse design method was applied to obtain a new wind turbine blade section with constant pressure-load along the chord, at the design inlet angle. In comparison with conventional blade designs, the new blade section has increased maximum lift, reduced leading edge suction peak and controlled soft-stall behaviour, due to the strength reduction of the adverse pressure gradient on the blade suction surface. Wind tunnel experimental results confirmed the computational results.

Resumo de autor: ABSTRACT: This paper presents a systemic modeling for a PV system integrated into an electric grid. The modeling includes models for a DC–DC boost converter and a DC–AC two-level inverter. Classical or fuzzy PI controllers with pulse width modulation by space vector modulation associated with sliding mode control is used for controlling the PV system and power factor control is introduced at the output of the system. Comprehensive performance simulation studies are carried out with the modeling of the DC–DC boost converter followed by a two-level power inverter in order to compare the performance with the experimental results obtained during in situ operation with three commercial inverters. Also, studies are carried out to assess the quality of the energy injected into the electric grid in terms of harmonic distortion. Finally, conclusions regarding the integration of the PV system into the electric grid are presented.

Resumo de autor: Winds inferred by Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites are a very important source of spatial wind field behavior along coastal areas particularly on small coastal areas that are temporary affected by strong flow disturbances mainly driven from land to the ocean. Gap flow circulations, among others, are an example of such wind phenomena disturbances which are not yet described by regional atmospheric models nor by CFD modeling. Such situations could compromise both offshore wind resource and park deployment studies on places affected by the presence of these phenomena types. A possible way to overcome this situation is the usage of SAR images assimilated into regional atmospheric models using certain type of assimilation techniques. In this work, a real case occurred in a coastal area in Portugal will be taken into account. A strong gap flow occurred during the beginning of the night 9 December 2010 was captured by a SAR image which was assimilated into the model. Some validation meteorological stations were used for validation purposes taken into account scenarios performed with and without wind SAR assimilation. Spatial results lead to the conclusion that the assimilation of SAR images improves the wind pattern results which reflects how SAR assimilation into the mesoscale models are important for simulating the coastal wind flow patterns.

Resumo de autor: ABSTRACT: Distribution networks face an increasing penetration of solar PV (photovoltaic) and small WTG (wind turbine generator) as well as other forms of micro-generation. To this scenario, one must add the dissemination of non-linear loads such as EV (electric vehicles). There is something in common between those loads and sources: the extensive use of power electronic converters with commutated switches. These devices may be a source of medium-to-high frequency harmonic distortion and their impact on the local distribution grid must be carefully assessed in order to evaluate their negative impacts on the network, on the existing conventional loads and also on other active devices. In this paper, methodologies to characterize effects such as: harmonics, network unbalances, damaging power line resonance conditions, and over/under voltages are described and applied to a real local grid configuration.

Resumo de autor: Neste trabalho apresenta-se o Atlas de Vento para a região de Lisboa e Estuário do Tejo, obtido com base em estações anemométricas do INETI na região, inserindo-se no âmbito de uma prestação de serviços acordada entre o INETI - Instituto Nacional de Engenharia, Tecnologia e Inovação e a Agência Municipal de Energia e Ambiente de Lisboa - Lisboa Enova. Para além do Atlas do Vento, apresentam-se os mapas do fluxo de potência do vento, e do número anual de horas de horas de funcionamento de uma turbina-teste, com potência nominal de 2300 kW. Os mapas foram calculados para cota de 80m, sendo esta uma das alturas normalizadas para o eixo de rotação do modelo de turbina seleccionado.

Resumo de autor: Este relatório tem como objectivo apresebtar a versão preliminar para o concelho de Sintra, inserindo-se no âmbito de uma prestação de serviços acordada entre o INETI - Instituto Nacional de Engenharia, Tecnologia e Inovação e a AMES - Agência Municipal de Energia de Sintra. Para este estudo, dispunham-se de dados de vento de quatro estações anemométricas, sendo uma delas a estação de referência de longo termo do INETI em S. João das Lampas (IN_01). Foram utilizados dados cartográficos disponibilizados pela AMES nas escalas 1:1000, 1:2000 e 1:5000. Para além do Atlas do Vento, apresentam-se os mapas do fluxo de potência do vento, e do número anual de horas de horas de funcionamento de uma turbina-teste, com potência nominal de 2300 kW.
